This section provides some answers to some of the common questions people have in relation to Deckman.

What type of instruments can Deckman connect to?
Deckamn has specific options when connected to B&G Hercules, Hydra & H1000, Ockam, Silva and Sailmath WTP but can also receive information from virtually any instruments via a NMEA connection.

Can I view Deckman information on my displays on deck?
Yes, if you have B&G Hercules, Hydra & H1000, Ockam, Silva or a Sailmath WTP.

What is a dongle?

A security key to prevent unauthorised use of Deckman. This should have been provided when you purchased a working version of Deckman.

Can I use Deckman on more than one computer?

Yes. You can use Deckman in demonstration mode with simulated data on any number of computers.

Deckman requires a dongle (see above) to connect to yacht instruments and run charts. You can move your dongle to different computers (for example to work on routing ashore) - you will have to install your charts on both computers.

What about running Deckman on a network?
Deckman will run on a network - the arrangements with the charting systems varies. Contact your agent for information.

What types of weather forecast can I use in Deckman?
You have the choice of inputting you own wind predictions in either a table or map form or using GRIBs (digital weather forecasts), which can be found on the internet.

What about tide or current?

Current works like wind forecasts - you can either input your own values or use GRIBs.

A tidal database is included in Deckman for popular areas or your can create your own tidal maps.

What are raster and vector charts?

These are two different types of digital charts.

Raster charts are simply a scan of an existing paper chart - they look like paper charts and give good detail. Raster charts supported by Deckman: ARCS, Maptech

The information on vector charts is entered manually in layers which can then be turned on an off as required. Vector charts scale quickly and generally take up less disk space on your computer. Vector charts supported by Deckman: C-Map, Livechart.

Note. You are not able to use all these chart types at the same time.

Why does my computer crash when I use Deckman?

Don't worry - this is a very uncommon problem! There are 3 known problems with particular versions of Deckman. The first two of these have been seen when the program is being closed down while the third happens while the program is in use.

If using a Euronav version before V6.01 with ARCS charts and a dongle number greater than 10000: you will need to ensure you have the latest version of the Euronav charting kit. The simplest thing is to upgrade to a later version of DfW. Contact you agent for further details.

If using a version before 6.05: when you try to connect to instruments using a serial port that is unavailable, Deckman may not restart after closing. The solution to this is to restart your computer, open Deckman and ensure that the serial port that you specify to connect to the instruments is not in use.

If using a version before V6.05: there is a problem when connected to B&G Hercules. If you are using the the "output" section in the "instrument's control" dialog then a problem occurs if you specify channel numbers in ascending order. The solution is to either input channel numbers in descending order or obtain a later version of Deckman.
